Thyroid
Reidel’s Thyroiditis
Case 1 Left thyroid lobe 9g, with a poorly defined fibrotic nodule 35mm in size with cystic change
& haemorrhage, thyroid autoantibody status not given, Thy4
cytology. This showed thyroid gland with
fibrosis. The gland was apparently stuck down at surgery. The
thyroid autoantibody status was not known. Debate centered on whether this was fibrosing variant of Hashimoto’s
thyroiditis, or Riedel’s thyroiditis. IgG4 fibrosclerosis was also raised although plasma cells
were not prominent. Because of the focal nature of the lesion Riedel’s
thyroiditis was favoured.
